Five Publishers and Scott Turow Sue Mehta and Mark Zuckerberg
You can probably guess what this lawsuit is about by reading the headline. Publishers Hachette, Macmillan, McGraw Hill, Elsevier, and Cengage, along with bestselling author Scott Turow, are suing Mehta and Mark Zuckerberg for copyright infringement, alleging that the company and its founder illegally used their work to train the artificial intelligence program Llama. As an author, I welcome this kind of behavior and hope to see a solution similar to what happened with Anthropic. We teach our kids in school that they can’t copy and paste someone else’s work without attribution because that’s called plagiarism, but AI companies don’t seem to be paying attention to that very simple standard.

250 vs. 250 Booklist
Many media outlets, including ours, have embarked on “best of the century” style lists in the past year or two, but the Brooklyn Public Library is going one step further. To celebrate the 250th anniversary of American colonization, they have curated a list of 250 of the best books from the last 250 years. This is a monster of a list, and a very good list as well. You can also try out different filters and genres. I use the “beautiful cover” filter, and I appreciate that the short reason for including this title is so thoughtful.
And Oprah’s next book club pick is…
It’s Time: Oprah’s Book Club Chooses john’s john Douglas Stewart selected him as the next choice. This is not necessarily surprising, since Stuart’s book was highly anticipated. But out of all the options for May’s book club, this is probably not the book most people would choose for her. This is Kathryn Stockett’s first book since her 2009 debut. help, called The Calamity Clubwas also published and seemed to be a staple of this (and other) celebrity book clubs.
Judge rules Trump administration’s termination of humanities grants unconstitutional
Over the past few months, rulings have been handed down in numerous lawsuits brought against the Trump administration in the wake of dismantling government agencies and programs. We saw the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) prevail in a lawsuit brought by 21 state attorneys general, and a second IMLS lawsuit brought by the American Library Association and the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees was resolved out of court.
