What makes me hesitant to call this list completely extensive is the obvious lack of diversity. Within the overall top 20 list, there are only two lists by authors of color (Kin by Tayari Jones and Night Objects by Eli Raphael), and the expanded list by genre doesn’t look much better. It’s kind of wild to think about 2026. As a side note, Jones Kin It has been named “Book of the Year” on quite a few lists.

Authors Guild investigates why writers’ salaries have fallen

This surprised me. With book clubs, increased access to digital books, physical books, and audiobooks, and a plethora of book subscription services, authors are above. They found that their income averaged $10,000, a 42% decrease since 2009. A study sponsored by the Authors Guild found that just 19% of the print and e-books read last month were purchased new, 6% were purchased through paid subscriptions (which lower royalties for authors), and 10% were purchased second-hand. The most common way to get the latest books was the library. 29% of readers surveyed took this route. When it comes to audiobooks, 36% bought them new, 37% borrowed them from a library, and the final third were obtained through other means, such as pirated copies.

But what is most surprising to me? Readers who earned more than $75,000 were “most likely to borrow books from the library rather than buy them.”

Latest list of best books of 2026

Adam Vitcavage has done a great job compiling a list of the best debut books of 2026 (so far). debut work. Some books were already on my list, some I had seen mentioned here and there, and some were completely new. This list includes titles from indies and major publishers alike, and leans heavily toward literary fiction, a particular kind of light-hearted fiction. Many of the characters in these books are queer, adult, immigrant, with confused familial relationships, and perhaps just confused themselves. So this is exactly my type of bright fiction, and that’s why I love this list so much.

Some great points: Age of Calamity: Story Written by Senaa Ahmad cat love Written by Thomas Q. Morin, one foot on earth Written by Pemi Sharp, name changedd: Yu-Me Balasingamchow, Maybe the body: poetry Written by Asa Drake.
