Introducing the three women at the center of the Skyland series: Yasmen, Soledad, and Hendricks, it focuses on Yasmen’s life as she comes out of a long period of grief. She and her ex-husband Josiah cannot hate each other. They raise two incredibly smart but overbearing children and run a restaurant together. We follow Yasmen’s journey to the possibility of moving forward, realize that moving forward may mean something different than what she expected, and we also see her family come together and improve themselves towards the ending they each deserve. For audiobook lovers

I mentioned that I plan on reading all of her books on audio, but this book is especially valuable in that format. When the director and author of a film about the hidden figures of the Harlem Renaissance finds the perfect actress to play the lead role, he realizes he’s in trouble. They already have intense chemistry, but their power imbalance likely won’t allow them to pursue anything romantic if they’re going to work together.

Even though this book is Kennedy’s first (but not last) Romance Award winner, I wouldn’t push this as her first book to pick up unless someone is looking for something very specific. The first work in the Hoops series, which is very difficult to read. long shot Introducing Iris and August, two people who have a passionate relationship at the worst possible time. Iris is already in a relationship, and August is about to enter the busiest period of his life: entering the NBA draft.

Years later, when they reunite, August is at the height of his career, but Iris’s “perfect” life with her basketball boyfriend, one of August’s biggest rivals, is anything but. But the two still have that strong connection, and perhaps August could be the one to help her find her way on her own. This book has quite a few content warnings. If you’re looking for something in particular, we recommend using your preferred method (Storygraph is a good place to start). However, the most important thing to know about this film is that it deals heavily with sexual violence, especially by professional athletes. Please read carefully.

Kennedy tears readers apart in most of her books, but sometimes she writes something nice and sweet that brings more smiles than tears. Here we meet two accomplished media professionals whose college friendships had a huge impact on them, but whose paths diverged as they pursued their careers. When they are gathered together for the big Homecoming interview (an important event at HBCUs, no matter how long it’s been since they graduated), everything they never talked about comes back, and all the sparks they didn’t address bubble to the surface. Maybe they have jobs and lives, but who’s to say things won’t change for the better? go home This is an Audible original and was later published in print, but if you’re a regular listener, you might want to try it on audio (it’s Homecoming! There’s a marching band!).

Since then Reel before you let goand long shot You’ll have plenty to read after reading each of these suggestions, as each is the first in a trilogy.
