It all started in 4th grade
When Colson Whitehead learned about the subway in fourth grade, he, like many young people, thought, actual Railway. The idea of creating a story based on that premise stuck with him, but it seemed too scary to work on for long. After workshopping the idea with his wife, agent, therapist, and editor, he sat down to make it a reality in 2014.
