Now, in more good news, a judge has ruled against the government’s drastic cuts to federal humanities grants that support the arts. This amounted to over $100 million in support for writers, researchers, and scholars. The judge prohibited the government from cutting off these subsidies and also criticized the use of artificial intelligence to do so.
Do we absorb information easier on paper than on a screen?
This is a question that is repeated over and over again, and one that has led to policy changes in classrooms around the world. This research is not as simple as saying “print is better” or “digital is better.” This is more nuanced and depends on the digital device used to read, including whether the reading experience includes ads or other web distractions. Text alignment is also important. This doesn’t go into great detail, as it’s not only about research into the format of the books we read, but also about why reading itself is such a difficult skill.

How Chicklit lost its footing
With recent releases, the devil wears prada 2this is a timely and interesting article about how “chick lit”, which was once a huge category, disappeared from the shelves. In the early 2000s, chick lit was at its peak, and it was frequently criticized as being “inferior” to other forms of literature. It was pretty much the same way that girls and women’s interests were treated in a sexist way back then (not to mention how we treated female celebrities back then!). Research also shows that when women do 30% of the talking, men perceive women to be “dominating” the conversation. That also applies here:
October 2003, just 8 months after release the devil wears prada—P.W. reported Possibility of oversaturation and fading of chick lights. Seven chick titles took a cumulative 90 weeks; P.W.In its 2002 hardcover listing, the magazine noted that “there is a sense in the publishing world that Chick Lit may be reaching a tipping point.” As with other book trends, publishers capitalized on Chick-Lit’s success by marketing more titles as Chick-Lit through new imprints specifically dedicated to Chick-Lit.
I appreciate that this piece explains where these “chick” books went. Currently, many of them seem to be incorporated directly into romantic comedies.
