PEN America finds literary translators are underpaid

It’s no wonder that only 3% of books published in the United States are translated. In a new report, PEN America highlights the inequities that literary translators experience within the industry. Back in 1969, the PEN American Translation Committee documented how dire the situation was for literary translators, citing that their “rights have never been satisfactorily developed.” And in 2023, we published a manifesto that reiterated the need for translators to be treated fairly within the industry. Now, in 2026, a report has been released showing how literary translators are underpaid, with their names often not appearing on book covers.

I came to know Dua Lipa as “that girl with the bop and the book.” Not only is she a mega-pop star with an absolute banger, she’s also a great advocate of good books and reading. And her interests go beyond the superficial book-toting trend that some celebrities seem to be engaging in these days. Many of the authors she interviewed as part of her online book club, Service95, remarked on how thoughtful and engaging she was as an interviewer. We can’t wait to see what Ripa has planned for this year’s festival, which will be held from October 21st to November 1st.
