Block mobile phone, part 23453902
What happens if you switch to a flip phone for a month? You annoy your friends, feel a little FOMO, and your brain starts to heal. There’s nothing particularly revolutionary about Emma Russell’s analog story, but if you’re looking for some motivation to properly gauge your relationship with technology, here’s what you’ll find. “After about a week, I stopped reaching for my phone and had the patience to read a book.” In 2026, it feels like the cultural tide will be heading towards smartphones in earnest, especially social media, and I couldn’t be happier.

will is coming to Hulu
Margaret Atwood’s adaptation of Testament, the 2019 sequel to The Handmaid’s Tale, will be available on Hulu on April 8th. Battles continue one after another‘s remarkable Chase Infinity leads the cast in “a dramatic coming-of-age story set in Gilead.” Couldn’t get past the first few episodes of season 1 The Handmaid’s Tale— The real world news cycle is more than enough for me — but I’m glad to see Hulu continuing to actively engage with stories like this in this cultural moment when the corporate overlords are all too willing to kneel to the Trump-Vance administration’s threats against “woke” content. Fiction can provide an accessible entry point and powerful exposure to consciousness-raising ideas, and whatever impact a show has is ultimately positive.
One of the great figures of modern literature
Like its titular protagonist, “Bartleby, the Scrivener” is also much less simple than many modern interpretations would have you believe. Bartleby said, “I’d prefer not to do that.” Is he opting out of capitalism? Do you comment on the dehumanizing nature of the job? Just to be a weirdo? Melville never tells us.
What you see in Bartleby is largely a product of what you want to see, and that’s part of the story’s great absurdity. We spent a lot of time revisiting this English class classic, Zero to Well-Read, and we think you’ll enjoy it too. Listen on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or your favorite podcatcher.
