American girls dressing up politics
American Girl The books were staples of my childhood in the late ’80s and early ’90s, but I didn’t consider them anything more than vehicles for selling expensive dolls. This Deep jumped into creating Addi, the series’ first black character, and changed everything. Jaha Nailah Avery speaks to the author and historian of the series, who served on the Advisory Committee (there was an Advisory Committee of Historians!) to explore why the first Black American girl is enslaved and her clothes mean that she communicates about her life. I never thought such care and details would have entered the plan. American Girl It’s great to see the book, and those who made it happen, receive a long-standing recognition.
