Thoughtful observation is a Hurston bag, which follows Johnny Crawford, who grew up in the black community of rural Florida. Beautiful and promising, Johnny endures difficulties and heartbreak until she arrives at her truth, through marriage, tragedy, and even natural disasters. This is the narrative trajectory, but what made it special for me is that it focuses on black women who claim to be an agency, not black under white gaze and oppression, which is a book that has little interest in black lives, rather than black people. This has become an unusually refreshing read among the classics I was assigned to seek the molding of a student, and more than that, Hurston has brought Johnny back to life with all her complexities, philosophy developments and flaws. I discovered that Johnny is a fascinating and exciting individual to follow and learn about.
Beyond Their eyesHurston’s catalogue is primarily non-fiction and anthropological. In this novel, Hurston appears to turn anthropological gaze inwards. She grew up in the All Black town of Eatonville, Florida, and certainly drawn from her own experiences, is involved in multiple short-lived marriages, and is based on the character of one ex-lovers. I hope she wrote this book for herself. She certainly wrote it for me.
