Well, I Tried.
Two months ago I wrote, “Open letter to John Lithgow: Stay away from Harry Potter.” While writing it, Lithgow had not yet officially accepted Dumbledore’s role in Harry Potter’s upcoming HBO TV adaptation. I knew it was a long shot for him to see it, never mind leaving the project, but I had to try.
A few days ago I was shocked to learn that Lithgow had seen my letter. In fact, it was texted to him by “a very good friend who is a mother of a trans child.” When asked whether his friend’s plea to leave this transphobic franchise had an impact on his thoughts on his role, he said, “Oh, heaven no.”
As you can imagine, I have a lot of thoughts about this experience.
