Lease’s book club goes up to the microphone
Hello Sunshine of Reese Witherspoon has partnered with IheartMedia to launch a podcast for Reese’s Book Club. “Reese’s Bookmarks,” which debuted as an IheartPodcast on June 24th, features “engaging conversations with celebrities, tastemakers and writers above Reese’s Book Club.” Witherspoon, who sold Hello Sunshine in 2021 in a Monster $900 million deal, will not host (their obligation will be spent on journalist and television host Danielle Robay), and she will be one of the executive producers. Emily Henry, the monarch queen of rom-com, appears in the first episode alongside Yulin Kuang, who directs Henry’s Beach Reed adaptation.

The clock is gone due to Tiktok’s publication experiment
According to reports from BookstoreTiktok Parent Company Bytedance appears to have closed the 2023 publication imprint on the 8th Note Press. Bookstore “The author and agent are currently negotiating the rights to titles acquired by the publisher, and the digital presence of the business appears to be quietly being removed.” Since its launch, 8th Note Press has acquired the rights to more than 30 novels, led by an editorial approach of “backward construction” informed by online trends. When Tiktok’s move to publishing was first announced, its appeal seemed obvious. Tiktok had the power to determine what’s viral as he moved units and cast bestsellers at rates the release had never seen before. Which authors don’t want an internal connection?
As Jane Friedman reports, the eighth notepress appears to have failed to provide a reasonable amount of support to the author, not only reversed the engineering success from within.
