Most borrowed books in New York City libraries in 2024
One of the big oddities about New York City is that the library is a federation rather than an integrated system, but one interesting effect of this is that data is collected borough-by-borough, allowing different parts of the city to It shows how it works. It seems to be read differently:
Chief Librarian Brian Bannon said while researching the New York Public Library list, he noticed many differences in genre preferences from borough to borough.
“The Bronx is more of a thriller, memoir, historical novel. Manhattan — literary fiction, contemporary society, relationship-driven. Queens, I watch fantasy, thriller, diverse voices, and then Staten. I watched The Island — a thriller, a family drama, a comforting book.”
The top book overall was “Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow” by Gabriel Zebin, while in Queens it was “The Women” and in the Bronx it was “The Heaven & Earth Grocery Store.”
