Nuzi Fizzles
But I think I expected this. Unless you’re very online savvy or work in the media, you don’t know who Olivia Nuzzi is. It’s that simple. It doesn’t help that the book itself is clearly really bad. Is there a version of this story that would actually sell books, something that investigative journalists would really dig into? I still think no. No one cares. Let’s all move forward.

Edelweiss, big price increase
Edelweiss is one of the conduits that flows through the modern publishing industry. As a media professional, I use this tool almost every day to browse catalogs, request review copies, and otherwise keep track of upcoming books I’d like to learn more about. One thing you can do if it’s that important is to raise the price. And Edelweiss has done just that. Edelweiss was recently acquired, which is often a moment when existing practices are reconsidered. And it almost never changes the price. In some cases, publisher fees can increase by nearly 300%, which is difficult to accept even if you really like the service. NetGalley is the only real competitor and not exactly a 1:1 replacement, but I’m interested to see if NetGalley has a chance to gain market share. It will also be an interesting moment for a startup to enter what is essentially a database management product.
