I’d bet on Thomas Schlesser’s Mona’s Eyes. That was basically until it appeared at the top of B&N’s Best Fiction of 2025 list for the week. The words “A heartwarming story that touches the soul and inspires the imagination” about a young girl’s adventures in a museum with her grandfather sound like they were made in a factory to ring the bell for Barnes & Noble’s Book of the Year.
Booker Prize introduces new children’s book award
The Booker Prize Foundation has announced a new children’s book prize starting in 2027. The Children’s Booker Prize aims to “celebrate the best contemporary novels for children aged eight to 12” and carries a prize of £50,000. Submissions will begin in spring 2026, with a final list of eight titles announced in November 2026. The winning entries, chosen by a panel of both children and adult judges, will be announced in February 2027. It’s always heartening to see new avenues for books being recognized, especially books with such big prizes. I’d love to see Booker wrap things up by awarding books for young adults as well in the future.

expanded version of genderqueer Coming in 2026
Maia Kobabe’s 2019 graphic memoir about growing up and coming out has been one of the most frequently targeted and banned books in the United States since its publication. An annotated edition of Gender Queer Will was released in May and includes Kobabe’s commentary, as well as contributions from queer and trans creators, comics scholars, and activists. May their efforts continue to be successful.
