People are paying $1,000 to read Among Strangers
Data may suggest that fewer people participate in book clubs, but that doesn’t mean reading isn’t a social activity. In fact, it’s worth noting the rise of book clubs where people pay to go somewhere and read with people who are looking for time away from home, work, and other responsibilities to get through their TBR. Years before it was fashionable to write about book camps, I went on a book camp with some friends, and it was great. Not everyone can read a book every day. Also, have you thought about spending some time in community with other readers? This is smart. No, you don’t have to shell out $1,000 unless you want to (so grab your friends, pack a big picnic basket, leave your phone at home, and dedicate a beautiful spring weekend to reading in the park!).

Texas gives first OK to required reading list including Biblical material
The Texas State Board of Education has given preliminary approval to a list of required reading for public school students across the state. The list, which was pared down from the original proposal, excluded important works by black authors such as Frederick Douglass and Booker T. Washington, as well as Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. However, the list includes several Biblical texts. It’s a very white and very old list. There’s nothing necessarily wrong with states having lists of books they recommend for students in their schools, but as the story here points out, this kind of mandate not only emphasizes what a partisan group of decision-makers think is important, but also ignores the fact that mandating such reading lists actively ignores the need for educators to implement such lists. The public has not yet been solicited for input on the list, but it’s worth digging into this great read by a Texas teacher with deep concerns about the list.
