And that’s what I like about picture books. They are great when you need a break from everything. It doesn’t matter how old you are! Pick up stories about gross monkeys and scary squirrels and lose yourself for a few minutes. (Or maybe longer – I don’t know because I read faster than when I was 5.)
Personally, I like picture books with lots of bright cartoon illustrations and lots of stupidity. And I decided to share five of my favorite picture books I’ve read recently. Next time you need a baby shower gift, skip the good night, moon (no attack, Margaret Wise Brown) and get one of these!
Dog vs Strawberry by Nelly Buchet and Andrea Zuill
The Basset Hound decided that she would try strawberries in the race. (This is probably the only kind of race I can win, TBH.) Stupidity continues! I’m a huge fan of all the books Andrea Zuill does, whether she writes and explains them or simply contributes to the artwork. My favorite is the sweet business pig.

Please visit the cafe on the edge of the forest by Mikey.
Mikey Please is a BAFTA award-winning and Oscar-nominated animation director. This is about his debut picture book, a fairytale-like cafe opening in the forest, and how Rene and Glumfoot try to please their first clients, the extremely difficult Ogre. Rene needs to find an alternative to Ogre’s request.

Baby awakened forever by Sandra Sallsberry
“A little baby falls asleep in the light of the moon. This is my favorite picture book of 2025. No lies. I’ve read it at least 50 times. It’s so funny! It’s about babies who can’t fall asleep no matter what their family tries to do. I love it.

Bearsuit Turtle makes friends with Bob Shea
Bob Shear has written many wonderfully stupid picture books (Dinosaurs vs Bedtime, Unicorn considers him to be pretty great), but this may be the most ridiculous and fun of all. It’s about a turtle wearing a bear costume and trying to convince another turtle that he is truly *bear. My favorite part is that his little head peeking out of the bear’s suit (you can see it on the cover).

Pine cones! By Helen Yun
And lastly, my favorite picture book of 2024! She picks up a pine cone from the ground while the family dog drags the young girl’s dad around the garden. She finds more and more pine cones, her collection grows, and eventually she brings them into a chaotic house. It’s very attractive, the illustrations are interesting and beautiful.
To sum it up, there are a few more picture book recommendations! This week there is Marcus Cutler’s hilarious crayon stub, portrayed by Rachel Moss, who came out in July, watching out for the fall of an iguana by award-winning author Edwidge Danticut. (And irrelevant: remember that curious George has no tail? Most people don’t. That’s the Mandela effect of the cartoon monkeys!)
Now, starbit, take the knowledge you learned here today and use it for good, not evil. If you want to know more about books, I’ll talk about mostly non-stop books (when I’m not reading). All books! And on Bluesky and Instagram.
