Kamala Harris publishes a memoir about the 2024 race
The day she began her for the president and the day after she declared she would not run for governor of California, Kamala Harris announced that she would be publishing a memoir on the experience. 107 days It will be released on September 23rd by Simon & Schuster. Harris made its release in a video released this morning, accompanied by the caption, “This book is not a summary of our race. A conflict of interest in the Booker Prize Panel?
Guardian Claire Adams’ novel Love Forms, which was registered for the 2025 Booker Prize, reports that it is currently under development with a production company owned by Sarah Jessica Parker, a member of the Booker Panel. Parker also published Adams’ first novel through her imprint SJP for Hogarth. Publishing is now a small world, as Gabby Wood, CEO of the Booker Prize Foundation, said Guardian“It is not uncommon for a judge to have a connection with the author on which the work was submitted, so every judge must first declare a conflict of interest.” Parker disclosed the dispute, and according to Booker’s rules, “If only one judge supports it, the book won its place on the Booker Prize 2025 longlist through the active support of other judges on the panel.”
The disclosure is great, but how many conflicts of interest are there? The opportunities for exposure that are given by creating and potentially winning major awards are extremely rare and I hate seeing what can taint the public’s perception of the integrity of the author and award. You really need to wonder why the SJP didn’t reject itself, exactly where the Booker Prize Foundation pulls the line.
