reading road trip

PBS Books and the Library of Congress have teamed up to produce a series of videos about the literary landscape in each state (as well as some other territories, with an upcoming episode about the U.S. Virgin Islands). There are currently seven episodes available, each approximately 30-35 minutes long. The snippets I saw were interesting, if not downright fascinating. I guess I just check out episodes in states that I have some personal connection to. Each episode is available to stream for free on the Library of Congress Center for the Book website.

“My life is filled with guilt and shame” by Karl Ove Knausgaard and Jeremy Strong

I’m not actually a Knausgardian. And you don’t have to be fascinated by interviews/conversations/therapy sessions with actor Jeremy Strong. I don’t know if I want Jeremy Strong to do all the writer interviews or zero interviews at all.

Snippet:

strong: So, my voice is a little different now, so bear with me. I have a lot of questions. And I have to say—I think you know this too—there are very few people on the planet that I would be more honored and genuinely excited to do this with. You can see me smiling, but I never smile. In case you don’t remember, we first met at the Louisiana Literary Festival in 2015. Since you were giving a reading, I thought I’d manage to say hello to you. It was the day before my wedding.

Knausgard: oh really?

strong: So, what I remember is you were smoking a Chesterfield and you dropped it on the lawn. And that was the moment I thought, “What can I say to this guy?” It was hardly an exchange. And a few years later, we drove to the ferry. Is it Ystad?

Knausgard: Yestad, yes.

strong:To go to Bornholm Island. And we passed through Gremmingebro. I remember thinking, “I just ate ice cream here.”
