SCOTUS refuses to hear important Texas book ban petition

In a blow to activist groups opposed to book bans, the Supreme Court rejected a petition to consider a Texas case regarding the removal of books from public libraries. Therefore, the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals will reject the free speech claims and rule in favor of the defendants. The appellate court’s decision vacated the district court’s preliminary injunction and the district court’s three-judge panel that had upheld that decision. “Are we at the point where libraries are writing a policy that says, “From now on, there will be no books in this library that feature gay characters?” This could open the door to so-called censorship of books,” said Laney Hawes, co-founder of the Texas Freedom to Read Project. Publishers Weekly. The decision applies throughout the Fifth Circuit’s jurisdiction, which includes Texas, Louisiana, and Mississippi. Dan Novak, deputy general counsel and general counsel at Penguin Random House, called the Supreme Court’s decision “a timing issue, but not a justice issue,” and expressed confidence that the issue would return to court through other pending cases. It really is.

Prolific romance novelist Fern Michaels dies

Fern Michaels wrote more than 200 novels in the romance and thriller genres, leaving behind a vast legacy by the time she passed away at the age of 92. Michaels is perhaps best known for her romantic thriller Sisterhood series, which began with Weekend Warriors. “My husband told me to buckle down and get a job,” Ms. Michaels wrote of the beginning of her writing career. “Rather than head into the outside world without any skills, I decided to write a book. As my husband said at the time, stupid people are stupid. Guess what, I don’t have that husband anymore.” Rest in Peace, Bravo.
