Rental house in Wang Weike

I missed the train during Wang’s debut hit song “Chemistry,” but I’ve heard great things about her writing. When I received an email about her third book, I took it as an omen and said yes to what sounded like a compelling slice of life from a couple’s perspective . One is the daughter of Chinese immigrants and the other is the son. Poor rural white parents. Kel and Nate meet at the Ivy League university they both attend. As you might imagine, they’re both motivated and focused on improving their situations, but for different reasons and in different ways. The story focuses on a couple in the early stages and later peaks of their careers, having graduated from college, entered adulthood, and been married for several years. Their perspective is determined by where they come from and what their respective families expect of them. When I say this, I don’t necessarily mean that they are catering to their family’s desires for who they should be or what they should provide.

We examine Kel and Nate’s differences, their dynamics with each other and their conflicts with each other’s families, through a variety of AirBnB-style rentals. There is a scene in which Nate’s white mother, embarrassed by the negative reaction to her disgusting and xenophobic comments about Kel and her family, confronts Karen, who threatens her Chinese-American daughter-in-law. It is a moment when people and families are confused and end up wrestling with the contradictions they find in real life, where ignorance does not always produce full-time prejudice. rental housing This work is not only a study of two people from completely different worlds, but also a story about marriage. It’s also a story about how we work hard for those we love, how we fail, the tricky dynamics that can arise, and how we move forward. In the best way possible despite our differences. It was the perfect bedtime story for right now and the situation in my life.
