A Fun Holiday YA Romance (and a Bonus TV Rec)
Dash and Lily are two teenagers living in New York, but they’ve never met (which is wild, since New York is notoriously small). One winter’s day, Dash was browsing the Trends shelf when he saw a note on the shelf that read, “Do You Dare?” It’s written on the cover. Inside the book is a challenge from Lily…he doesn’t know it’s Lily yet, but he’ll get there. Thus begins the story of two lonely teens who form a real connection with each other through notebooks before meeting in person. All this happens in the days leading up to Christmas.
The novel switches between Dash and Lily’s perspectives throughout the story. We see Dash and Lily learn more about each other and try to understand who the other is. It is a mystery to each of them, but not to us. This is a really fun premise to watch unfold, but it’s even more fun with the notebooks the two people use to communicate and get to know each other before they actually meet. Who needs a DM?
In traditional holiday romance style, this is the story of two people who discover love even at Christmas. Dash is cynical about Christmas. On the other hand, Lily has always loved Christmas. Sometimes she goes singing carols. Yes, she is a teenager who likes to carol. with an adult. in her free time. But this year is different. This year, Lily’s parents plan to abandon her and go to Fiji for the holidays. As such, Lily is usually optimistic and cheerful about almost everything, although she sometimes has doubts about holidays and family in general.
Dash and Lily communicate because they both feel misunderstood in some way, and by writing down each other’s thoughts, they find an openness that they would never have with real friends. I come to do it. They listen to each other, and more importantly, they open their lives to new experiences and challenge each other to rediscover who they are and what they want from life. . It’s refreshing to read a holiday romance where both characters feel like fully realized human beings, while also showing the ability for both characters to actually grow.
