Her relationship with her adoptive parents was strained, and Alejandra had just met her biological mother when her husband’s job took her far away from her mother. Although she distances herself from Mexican-American culture, the community may be the only thing that can help her and her children survive the intergenerational hauntings that come their way.

When a ghoul shows up at Alejandra’s house, we can only assume she’s having a mental breakdown. The veiled malevolence of the monster infects her, telling her she’s worthless and ungrateful, but it’s not until the monster comes after her children that she decides to dig deep into her family’s history and seek help from a local apothecary to find answers and the strength to fight back.

This is a speculative body horror you don’t want to miss, especially if you’re looking for a story about motherhood or a cultural connection. Books that highlight the real benefits of maternal health and therapy are always on my bookshelf.
