The central theme of sisterhood and strong humor give this story a sense of levity. But this coming-of-age moment and place also gives us an opportunity to consider the significance of a new generation of Black Americans gaining upward mobility and greater access to certain freedoms while battling the deeply racist, oppressive, and violent institutions and norms that continue to make their lives dangerous. One path is a solid path to the upper echelons of African American society through academic achievement, and the other path is through working class life and toward the desires of the heart. Kin This work captures the moment when two girls from the same small town and with similar circumstances travel through the different worlds of the black South. Through it all, they remain tied to each other and to their beginnings.

This story is full of surprises, expressing the experience of being even more marginalized by being a queer black woman, and I enjoyed traveling with Vernis and Annie through Jones’ expert storytelling. Once you read it KinRead it and you’ll see why everyone, myself included, is fascinated by this book.
