Most US adults read a book in the last year
There tends to be a lot of debate about whether American adults read anymore, and each year we receive one or two surveys that offer either “good” or “bad” news. The important thing to remember is that this is just a number, and reading is one of the billions of things people can do with their free time. However, a recently released study by Pew Research provides some interesting insights into the reading habits of American adults. Last year, 75% read at least part of a book (not bad!), preferred print formats (although audiobooks are on the rise), and few joined a book club.

Character.ai launches AI-powered “books” feature to let users play inside classic literature pride and prejudice and the great gatsby
On the plus side, this seems to be using characters that are already in the public domain rather than stealing the author’s intellectual property. On the other hand, it’s hard to see how allowing self-insert gameplay of classic characters “makes classic literature more accessible and interactive for modern audiences. By lowering the barrier to entry, the company is betting that participatory storytelling can act as a gateway to traditional texts, especially for younger users accustomed to interactive media.” That feels like an overly cynical view of young people and an overly optimistic view of the value of AI. Similarly, if we focus on the classics, how diverse are these books? Do we really want teens to interact with chatbots as a means to “solve” the problem of not reading “traditional” texts? (Also, back to the topic, school librarians may be a way to engage young people with the classics.) and Introducing more modern and diverse classics).
People are paying $1,000 to read Among Strangers
Data may suggest that fewer people participate in book clubs, but that doesn’t mean reading isn’t a social activity. In fact, it’s worth noting the rise of book clubs where people pay to go somewhere and read with people who are looking for time away from home, work, and other responsibilities to get through their TBR. Years before it was fashionable to write about book camps, I went on a book camp with some friends, and it was great. Not everyone can read a book every day. Also, have you thought about spending some time in community with other readers? This is smart. No, you don’t have to shell out $1,000 unless you want to (so grab your friends, pack a big picnic basket, leave your phone at home, and dedicate a beautiful spring weekend to reading in the park!).
