it’s complicated
The biography of Judy Blume by Mark Oppenheimer will cause a lot of media heat in any case, but the news that Blume, who took part in interviews, provided Oppenheimer with personal documents and had connections with dozens of sources, refused to comment on the book will surely activate the Streisand effect. Rather than trying to guess what happened, I recommend reading Elizabeth Egan’s full story here.

Regular reminders that books are always political
More than 194 library systems in Washington, Oregon, and California have teamed up to create the West Coast’s largest book club. One Book, One Coast is a “shared community reading program that celebrates literacy, learning, community, and civic discussion.” The books they chose speak volumes. They Called Us the Enemy by George Takei tells the story of a writer, actor, and activist who was imprisoned in an American concentration camp during World War II. Physical copies of the book are available at all participating libraries, and unlimited digital copies of the ebook are available in both English and Spanish on Overdrive’s Libby app from April 1st to June 6th. May their efforts be successful.
