A Time Travel Book for Noir Fiction Fans
Flux by Jinwoo Jung
flux This work is written as a revealing story told by the narrator to the main character in a fictional detective show. Through this device, the story retains the gritty noir lens of the television series. Brandon has just been fired from his job at a magazine and is determined to end his pseudo-romance. After quitting his job after a near-fatal accident, he meets a stranger who witnessed the incident and is offered an unusual job opportunity.
Brandon’s connections to a mysterious company with a celebrity headquarters take him to strange places and cause unexplained stasis in time. He begins to investigate his own spiraling life and sees a different kind of opportunity in the precarious position he finds himself in. Brandon’s storyline is punctuated by scenes from the life of Beau, a young boy who loses his mother and whose relationship with his father is falling apart in the aftermath, Blue, a mysterious loner involved in the busting of a start-up company, and a detective series that explores the representation and stereotypes of Asian Americans on screen and the star’s abuse scandal.
There’s a lot going on here. The exploration of identity as an Asian American, what it feels like to lose an aspect of one’s identity to biracial identity, the pervasive and lasting effects of unprocessed grief and trauma, and representation in media and celebrity worship. What made me read this book was not Brandon, the ghost of grief whose pain made him toxic and difficult to like, but rather the act of exploring terrifying questions about life’s great tragedies and solving the puzzle of this story. I hope you enjoy it 12 Monkeesa 90’s Terry Gilliam time travel movie starring Bruce Willis and Brad Pitt, check this out.
