Read Harder This Black History Month
Model house by Rivers Solomon
The author of such genre-defying novels as Ghosts of Unkindness and The World of Sorrow returns with a unique interpretation of a haunted house. The Maxwell brothers grew up as the only black family in their neighborhood, in a home plagued by unexplained phenomena. They endured because their mother refused to give up the house, but as adults they avoid it at all costs. When their parents die, they are forced to walk through the house again to find out what caused their deaths. This is a queer and transgender haunted house story, and it’s less about the setting and more about what happens after a haunted encounter and the horrors of real life. Please read the warning for child sexual abuse content before picking up this book. But it’s a powerfully written, unsettling, and haunting read that will stick with you. —Danica Ellis
