Autumn book sales look strong
A double-digit improvement over 2024 is nothing to sneeze at. This is the state of the publishing industry in September, with 14% more books purchased in the same month this year than last year. The numbers for October were also strong, increasing by more than 6%. Growth was more than 11%, led by adult fiction. The caveat here, if it’s really a caveat, is how far Amazon has returned to more normal buying patterns. Does that mean more people are buying books, or does that mean Amazon returns a lot of books later, or what? Still, going up is better than going down.
End of civilization reading list
I don’t have much time to indulge in Doomerism these days. Yes, there is much to resist and mourn and condemn. But the “sky is falling” statement is actually just paralyzing (even if it were true, Chicken Little wasn’t exactly preparing for what would happen if the sky were to actually fall). But Ted Gioia is no Chicken Little, but neither is he a tinkering grasshopper. So he actually collects books about the end of things and the collapse of things. They serve as warnings and may contain wisdom on how to avoid the worst outcomes.
About Book Riot Today:
We explore the top 40 book checkout lists from public libraries large and small across America to highlight some of this year’s most popular books. What’s fun about looking at public library book popularity is that it’s on a yearly basis. This means that books published this year may sit alongside books published several years ago. Genre books tend to see more top book lists in libraries than in other outlets where people edit or write about the year’s best or top books.
