Cold Wire by Chloe Gong
Epidemics and climate change are forcing people to completely change their lives. Most people will be transported to the “outback” which is virtual reality. However, poor people are forced to live in the “rural areas”. But inland, things are far from perfect, with a cold war raging between the two countries of Medor and Attawa. However, it is the Medan orphans of Attawa who suffer the most as they are forced to enroll in the military academy.
Eilare accomplishes everything he has to do, and after graduating, he becomes a member of a private unit in the countryside. But then an Atawa anarchist frames her for assassinating the government, and she must either work with him on a dangerous mission or commit treason.
Meanwhile, Leah’s work at the military academy is almost over, and she is tasked with one final task with her old enemy. Leah plans to work with him, but she plans to do better so she can secure the position of valedictorian. However, there is much more that either one knows.
As Eilare and Lia’s lives continue to intertwine despite being in different reality dimensions, they begin to wonder what their connection is. . . And what kind of conspiracy is keeping them together? This is the first in a trilogy and looks like it will be a great read for fans of science fiction, virtual reality, and stories not far from our real world.
