A Haunting Collection of Twisty, Turny Micro Stories
In particular, the title story, “The Woman Dies,” explores the common trope of Hollywood movies, television shows, and comic books using female characters to advance the story. If you look at the minimal structure of a story, you can see how many stories require women as props or tools for the male protagonist. It’s also fascinating that the story has an unexpected ending.
Another story, “The Masculine Touch,” imagines a world where male voices are marginalized and only the courage of certain individuals can begin to change public perception and the need to consider the masculine perspective. This feeds into the male-centered discourse that seems to be prevalent right now, as certain conservative and religious sectors of society seek to chip away at the rights women have won.
One of the more disturbing stories is “The Autopsy of Misogyny,” which describes what appears to be an autopsy. While explaining her own anatomy, the protagonist continues to comment on how the audience keeps fainting and collapsing during her demonstrations. It’s viscerally unsettling and somehow even dark in a really unexpected way.
I also loved “Reflections,” which imagines a character who keeps missing out on all the action. Everything is happening right behind or next to them. This is a fun transmission of a narrative device in which characters encounter important events and overhear important comments. For example, one line laments, “There seemed to be an important conversation going on between the characters, but at that moment a car nearby honked its horn, so I couldn’t hear it.” Chef’s Kiss!
Some stories go to dark, dark places, while others are very playful and humorous. For example, there is “Bond,” which is based on the idea that all the Bond girls from the James Bond movies gather together on a regular basis. Oh, the stories they tell! And the shadows they cast! There are some strange stories told by inanimate objects like national anthems and sweaters.
Overall, if you’re in the mood to read a collection of short, bizarre, and surreal stories; woman dies They fit you like a glove.
