Even if you’ve never read the book or seen the early ’80s movie starring Guy Pearce and Henry Cavill, you probably know some vague form of this story. A depressed man tries to escape from prison, get the treasure, take revenge on his enemies and win back the love of his life. These are the main characteristics of this story, but it is the breathtaking pace, powerful emotions, and detailed plot of deception and retribution that bring this epic adventure to life and make it highly readable even today. I hesitate to write this for fear of sounding like an insult, but I promise it’s not. Count of Monte Cristo It’s a modest soap. The writing, character development, and pacing are all great, and it’s all these spot-on elements combined with drama that give this story teeth and timelessness.

Now I join the chorus of people saying, “No, it’s really good.” If you’re looking to read a gritty classic, I highly recommend this satisfying book.
