Publications remain torn about AI
A new study from the Book Industry Study Group (BISG) shows that almost half of industry experts use AI tools, but almost everyone (98%) is worried. This is a predictable and legitimate response in an industry where products are pirated to train large-scale language models and are now competing with AI-generated slops in the online marketplace. In addition to concerns about copyright and intellectual property protection, the responses indicated that “most organizations using AI lack formal policies or guidelines, and many people do not institutionally adopt closure and enterprise models to better protect their data.” Publishers may not be able to do much on their own about copyright issues that require legal and judicial intervention, but it’s great to see them address AI guidelines within the company.
