Our Next American Poet Award Winner

Arthur Ze is the next poet award winner consultant for American poetry. The Library of Congress named him the US Poet Award winner from 2025 to 2026, and will begin his term in October with free public reading. Sze stands on the shoulders of giants, including Ada Limón, Joy Harjo and my personal favorite Tracy K. Smith. He has already chosen his special focus: the art of translation. By translating Chinese poetry, as an honorary faculty member at the American Indian Institute of Arts, and writing his own poetry, he works to put together an “anthology of poetry translated from various languages and periods.” Congratulations to this skilled and award-winning poet!

Great bookstores are attracting a bit of attention

I am shaping up slices of space to highlight the indie bookstores co-owned by former mobs. Hannah Oliver Depp spoke to NBC Washington about how a decline in Business DC’s Loyalty Bookstores has been seen since the federal acquisition. Depp points to organizations lined up on missions that he feared, “If they were seen to support independent bookstores owned by black, strange, Asians and disabled people, they’re afraid of impact,” and the article mentioned Doge-Effected’s job cuts that impact the wallet. It is also difficult to imagine when the outside world looks like a police state, and even being encouraged to participate in leisurely community engagement. I support people who just want to live in a safe space, community organizers, and small businesses like the loyalty bookstores floating in these difficult times. The banned wagon is back!

For the third year in a row, Penguin Random House has been on banned wagon tours. This year, they will visit libraries and indie bookstores in Washington, DC and Philadelphia.
