Bookshop.org sales are rising sharply

I’ll grab my butt. Bookshop.org reported sales of 65% year-on-year in the first half of 2025. This is always an eye-opening number, but it’s particularly noteworthy as industry-wide sales have declined so far this year. CEO Andy Hunter attributes $1 million (5% of total sales) of additional revenues from the recent anti-prime sale, compared to a better rate than the base rate on Bookshop.org, which launched in January. What’s the rest of the growth? My best guess is that anti-Amazon sentiment and consumer boycotts have reached a turning point with things like left-leaning middle-class and upper-class readers who can be willing to pay premiums to avoid supporting companies that contradict personal and political values. And it’s not harmful that inflation and tariffs appear to have reduced Amazon’s ability to offer deeper discounts and faster shipping than other retailers.
