The truth that universally acknowledges that a new internet platform focused on writing triggers literary experiments… And it’s time for Substack. People publish fiction, release chapters of memoirs one at a time, write book reviews, and provide commentary on the publishing industry. Experiments are predictable in the best possible way and can lead to truly innovative work. New Yorker The works linked above. But I would like to have words with him about this:
The literary mainstream has always been shaped (for better or worse) by intermediary agencies such as university creative writing programs, difficult small magazines, and newspaper book reviews. Perhaps Substack could have a similar era of influence, and could be a place where people gather for an accessible 21st century literary community, collaborate on the formation of new reader sensibilities, and share their own experiments at a fast, low cost.
Conrad, the literary mainstream, calls calls drawn in sections of creative writing programs, indie journals and newspaper books. It’s been a long time since, by coincidence, Web 2.0 launched the blog boom that democratized literary discourse and created the first wave of indie newsletters. If Substack is supposed to serve as a new kind of literary institution – it cultivates community, develops sensibilities, and cultivates reward experiments at speed and low cost. But don’t pretend you haven’t seen this. Don’t tell me about old magic, kids. I was there when it was written.
