Safe Harbor By Padma Venkatraman
This is a lovely intermediate poetry novel about a mother and daughter who moved from India to Rhode Island after divorce. Geeta misses everything about her old house, her family, the pet dog she had to leave behind, and the food. Geeta struggles to make friends at school, and popular girls laugh at her for her accents and clothes. She becomes friends with a child named Miguel who lives in a nearby apartment. The two find an injured seal on the beach, and Miguel helps the Marine Animal Rehabilitation Center. Geeta enjoys visiting the seal, and she sees the mirror appearing on the seal. It makes her angry about how others treat the environment and drives her to action. A great book about immigration, environmentalism, mental illness and friendship.
