Agents are looking for books like this…
I don’t know I saw the literature quiz I found fun, let alone linked it last time, but Marco Kay Light Hub I came up with one: guess what manuscript wish list descriptions, actually looking for a list of literary agents, guess which one is fake. If you are unsure what the manuscript’s wish list is, this is the 2-minute version. Agents use these to let the query know what kind of books the author represents and actively seeks. This quiz is because they have become more and more specific over the past few years. I can tell you that I failed this quite spectacularly. Even if I don’t understand it, I think I’ll read #8 for real: Good Ferras On the ice.
Mellon Foundation announces emergency funds for the State Humanities Council
This is what the foundation should do now. So many people feel helpless, and the scale of this administration’s excess is certainly overwhelming. But there’s a lot of money on the bystanders, and money can do things! Just because you can’t ride the ice yourself or get back Roe doesn’t mean that your targeted, marginal dollars can’t support what you care about. Could a very deep pocket in a place like the Ford Foundation consider such an extraordinary effort to support terrestrial arts organizations? I don’t feel much of a mood “Yeah, more MacArthur!” And “protect your local library with your body,” and perhaps the dollar would be best spent differently for a while.

Looking for the IT book for May 2025
At the beginning of each month, Rebecca Shinsing and I try to figure out what this month’s book is. It’s popular, lively, interesting, artistic and somehow important in a special way. Many listeners on the book Riot Podcast say that’s their favorite thing we do. So maybe check it out. Once you read this newsletter, you’ll be hooked on it.
