Each year since its inception, the program has recognized three books (one fiction, one nonfiction, and one poetry) that deepen our understanding of science and technology. The authors of these books will each receive $10,000 and will be celebrated at a ceremony in March and featured on public television programs across the country. To be eligible, your book must have been published in English by a U.S. publisher within the past three years. Winners are selected by a committee operating independently from National Book Foundation staff.

Audiences focus on the audiobooks themselves, judging each title’s performance, direction, production, and content, but the titles that round out this year’s finalists in several categories lack diversity. There are several categories that do not offer books written by authors of color. history/biography (also comprised entirely of male-identified authors), mystery, and science fiction. This does not mean that the other categories lack representation or that the performers and production teams are not inclusive. However, it is important to point out that different stories can continue to uplift those with more privilege.
