In fact, most of the people I know who have read dozens of such sordid fantasy books and share this obsession have senior positions, stressful workloads, and significant responsibilities. I am. The New Yorker’s Best Books of 2024

By now, the best-of-the-best list is starting to blur, and some consensus is starting to form outside of James as well. So my eyes are looking for surprises now. Things you’ve never seen anywhere else, and in some cases, you didn’t know (or remember) they existed. And most of the really wide lists have several that I need to look up on them. Here are two books from The New Yorker’s Essential Reads that stopped me scrolling. “The Calculation of Volume” and “The Silence of the Choir.” Not surprisingly, they are published by small presses and translated, and both are welcome additions to my future reading considerations.

Has BookTok passed its peak?

At Book Riot, Arvinn Cerezon talks with publishers about the current state and trajectory of BookTok. Parts that impressed me:

She sees the “As Seen on BookTok” tables that have been popular in bookstores for the past four years slowly being phased out. Similarly, publishers will most likely abandon the “TikTok sensation” permanent stickers that have recently become an essential element on paperback covers. “Like BookTube and Bookstagram, BookTok will continue to be an important element for authors and publishers to target when promoting their books. “It’s more likely to be true for fiction writers,” she said.
