Oprah launches ‘Anchored’ podcast with author interviews
The first thing that arrived in my inbox this morning was a press release announcing The Oprah Podcast. Frankly, I’m surprised this doesn’t already exist. According to the release: “Oprah welcomes today’s foremost thought leaders, global newsmakers, bestselling authors, visionaries, and culture changers to discuss timely themes such as happiness, resilience, consciousness, and connection. We plan to explore and help listeners live their own lives better” on their journey to living their best life. ” The show will be “anchored” by monthly interviews with authors of Oprah Book Club selections, and the whole shebang will be sponsored by Starbucks. Seems like the most obvious thing in the world to me. This isn’t something you’d put together in a month (right?), but if you’re going to draft a “Joe Rogan podcast for leftists,” this feels ready to wear.
Costco to end book sales at hundreds of stores starting next year
We first heard this rumor earlier this year, but it looks like Costco’s plan to drastically reduce the real estate it gives to books is on the horizon. However, it is not as dire as the worst reports made it seem. About 100 stores will have book tables available year-round, and the remaining stores will have book tables available during the holiday season. For those who didn’t follow this story the first time, it was interesting to note that Costco’s focus on this move was not sales, but logistics. Books should be unpacked one at a time, purchased one at a time, and replaced constantly. If sales had been astounding, they probably would have kept it as is, but Costco has always loved simplicity. You’ll want to know the actual difference in total book sales that Costco sees overall. It may be less than you think.
These are the most read books in the 2024 Goodreads Reading Challenge
The type of people who participate in the Goodreads Reading Challenge are a little different from the average book buyer. That’s why the most read books in Goodreads’ annual reading challenge are more akin to literary/indie bookstores than the books that appear on that year’s NPD BookScan list.
