Ohe by Melissa Mogollon

I don’t know how to talk about this book without sounding like a wild fangirl pero ahi les va. Luciana, a Colombian-American teenager, is assigned to act as Abuela’s caretaker while trying to get through her senior year of high school. She’s also trying to convince Abue to evacuate her family’s home as Hurricane Irma hurtles toward Miami. Abue then undergoes a dire medical diagnosis, but the already eccentric and stubborn old woman digs in her heels and refuses to leave. A series of phone calls with Luciana’s sister are so perfectly depicted that it feels like we’re listening on a separate line, and we learn about Luciana, Abue, Luciana’s mother, and the other women in the family. Knowing this, I spent a long time unpacking my belongings. Buried secrets, generational trauma (oops), and all sorts of topics. This debut is a mix of warm hugs, full-body laughs, punches to the gut, and the juiciest kisses, plus my own kind of profanity. I really love it. —Vanessa Diaz
