Destiny of Death by Tesia Tsai

Kang Siying is a shaman who makes a living by guiding the dead home. Thanks to this, she no longer fears death. But when her own father became ill, Shiyin was horrified and knew she needed to do whatever she could to get his father the medicine he needed. She was offered a very lucrative job with many dangers: to go to an unfriendly state to retrieve the corpse of a missing prince. She needs money, so she joins the job.

But when she arrives, things are not normal. Placing her amulet on a prince’s corpse can bring him back to life, rather than simply casting a spell to force him to obey her commands. Shiin knows that if she doesn’t have enough life force inside of her, she won’t be able to live long.

So the prince makes her an even better offer than the one she has already taken. She helps him find and cleanse evil spirits and increase his life force. However, as she continues this adventure with the prince and fights all kinds of evil spirits, Shiyin begins to learn why the prince went missing. And it might come to her now.

The Chinese folk practice of necromancy was the inspiration for this work. Necromancy in general has been an interesting theme in several YA books over the last year. — Kelly Jensen
